The Galle Fort & Southern Coast Tour is a journey through one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic and historically layered coastal regions – from the iconic 17th-century Dutch Fort of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched on a rocky headland above the Indian Ocean, to the wave-washed shores of Unawatuna and the atmospheric stilt fishermen of the southwestern coastline. This is a tour of contrasts: ancient colonial architecture and breezy beachside energy, layered history and natural coastal beauty, all woven together along one of the most scenic stretches of road on the island.

Tour Highlights
Galle Fort - A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Galle Fort is the most complete colonial sea fortress in Asia – a 17th-century Dutch stronghold whose coral-and-granite ramparts enclose a living town of boutique hotels, galleries, cafes, and restored colonial villas that create one of South Asia’s most atmospheric heritage environments. Walking the ramparts at sunset, with the Indian Ocean on one side and tiled rooftops on the other, consistently ranks among travellers’ most memorable moments in Sri Lanka.

The Stilt Fishermen of the Southern Coast

The stilt fishermen of Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast are one of the island’s most iconic images – solitary figures perched above the surf on slender poles, silhouetted against a brilliant tropical sky in a practice that has its roots in the post-World War II era. Watching them at work around Koggala and Ahangama in the late afternoon light is one of those Sri Lanka moments that photography cannot quite capture but the memory holds perfectly.

Unawatuna Beach

Unawatuna is one of the southwest coast’s most beloved beach settings – a curved, palm-lined bay of warm, reef-protected water minutes from Galle Fort, excellent for snorkelling and defined by cheerful beachside cafes that have drawn travellers back for decades. An afternoon here after a morning at the Fort, cold coconut in hand and the Fort’s lighthouse just visible above the palm line, is a very particular kind of Sri Lankan happiness.

Handunugoda Tea Estate or Koggala Cinnamon Plantation

Handunugoda Tea Estate is home to the world’s only commercially produced Virgin White Tea – a tea so delicate its leaves are harvested in morning dew by gloved workers to avoid contamination, with a colonial-era factory tour and tasting that reveals the extraordinary range of Ceylon tea. Alternatively, the nearby Koggala cinnamon plantations offer a fascinating walk through aromatic groves where true Ceylon cinnamon is hand-peeled and processed using age-old methods.
