Udawalawe National Park Safari Tour
Book Now

Udawalawe National Park is the single most reliable wildlife destination in Sri Lanka for travellers who want a guaranteed, extraordinary elephant encounter – a vast open-grassland sanctuary bordering the Udawalawe Reservoir where wild Asian elephant herds of remarkable size move freely through the park throughout the year. Unlike the denser forests of Yala or Wilpattu, Udawalawe’s open savanna landscape means that wildlife is visible at long range and encounters are frequent, extended, and deeply satisfying. This is a day tour that consistently produces the kind of wildlife sightings that make travellers question how they ever thought any zoo or wildlife park could come close.

Tour Highlights
Wild Elephant Herds of Udawalawe

Udawalawe’s wild elephant population – estimated at 500 to 700 individuals permanently resident in the park – is one of the densest and most visible in any protected area in Asia, with large herds crossing the road, bathing at the reservoir, and grazing in open grassland routinely encountered on morning safaris. Watching a matriarch lead her family across the road at close range, calves tucked under their mothers’ bodies and young bulls sparring in the background, is one of the great wildlife experiences available anywhere on earth.

Elephant Transit Home

The Elephant Transit Home is a government rehabilitation centre for orphaned calves rescued from across the island – a genuine conservation facility, not a tourist attraction. Visiting during a daily feeding session provides an intimate, moving encounter with baby elephants at every stage of rehabilitation, from wobbly newborns to playful juveniles charging the milk truck with competitive enthusiasm.

Diverse Wildlife & Exceptional Birdlife

Beyond its famous elephants, Udawalawe’s open grassland supports water buffalo, spotted deer, jackals, and an outstanding community of waterbirds including painted storks, purple herons, and the enormous lesser adjutant stork. The park’s open character and large reservoir make it one of the finest birdwatching destinations in the country, and the combination of large mammal and avian diversity gives Udawalawe safaris a breadth that the more jungle-dense parks cannot always match.
